Chapter Eight

The metallic tap of Bastian's knife against the wooden table was getting really old, and Bastian set it aside

so he'd stop fiddling with it like a stir-crazy idiot. He looked up at the clock again before he could stop himself,

and even though the minute hand had only moved over five tiny marks since he'd last checked, he still groaned.

He'd put dinner back in the oven exactly forty-seven minutes ago to stay warm.

Riley was usually so uptight about being on time. Punctuality was practically his middle name. Bastian

knew they'd argued, but that wasn't enough of a reason for Riley to be over an hour late getting home, was it?

Bastian ran his hands through his hair and rubbed at the back of his neck.

A soft jingle caught his attention over the light pattering of the rain outside, and he leaned back in his seat

to look around the corner into the living room. Zoe was pacing back and forth in front of the tiled entryway. She

stopped after a few seconds, sitting and looking up at the doorknob. God, even the cat was waiting for Riley to

come back.

"Zoe," he cal ed, making a kissing noise with his lips. Her ears twitched his direction, but she still stared up at the door. "He's just a little late, Zoe. Come here." He beckoned her with a scratching motion of his hand near the floor, and she trotted over with a loud meow. He picked her up and cuddled her on his lap. "It's al right. He probably just stopped at the store or something on his way home. Maybe they had him stay late, cover someone

else's ass for not showing up."

Zoe purred and nuzzled him, but it didn't stop his stomach from tying itself in knots. The more excuses

he came up with, the more improbable all of them sounded. Riley had a cel phone, dammit. He could have called

if he was going to be late. That left him with two options, and both bothered him. On the one hand, Riley could

be keeping him waiting on purpose to get back at him for bringing up the whole nightmare problem. Riley wasn't

a vindictive man, though. They'd had their spats in the past, but it usually ended with amazing make-up sex, not

one of them going missing in action.

On the other hand, something else could have happened, could have kept Riley from getting home. He

shuddered and pushed the thought away. He hugged Zoe until she struggled in his arms and jumped down to sit

by the front door again.

There were a mil ion totally legitimate reasons Riley could be late. He smiled and shook his head. "He's

fine," he told himself. "He'l be home any minute, and then you'll feel like even more of a dumbass."

He jumped out of his seat with a loud yelp when the phone rang. His heart hammered in his throat, and

he laughed off the tension as he reached for the phone. See? There was the phone call now. He'd just been

jumping the gun. He leaned against the wall as he pressed the button on the phone and held it to his ear.
